Blue Ligh in Aesthetic Medicine

Many of the treatments currently used in aesthetic medicine are based on the seemingly paradoxical principle of causing controlled damage to stimulate a biological repair response, thereby improving the quality of the skin tissue. Commonly used aesthetic medicine techniques, such as fractional lasers, microneedling and transcutaneous radiofrequency, have different modes of action but share this mechanism. The treatment produces a biological stimulus that the body interprets as injury.

As with the healing process of a skin injury, acute inflammation is an essential component of this regenerative process. For this reason, it is normal to observe some clinical signs of an inflammatory response after a treatment, such as redness, burning, oedema and erythema. Although these effects are transient, they can be uncomfortable for the patient and sometimes become excessive in terms of both intensity and duration.

Blue light photobiomodulation, thanks to its action of regulating inflammation, can help reduce recovery times and patient discomfort when applied after an aesthetic treatment.

Blue Ligh in Aesthetic Surgery

In aesthetic surgery, the quality of the scar is a determining factor in the final perception of the result. In addition to using an appropriate incision and suturing technique, it is essential to promote optimal tissue repair that can proceed without obstacles in order to obtain a thin, flat, elastic scar that is as well integrated as possible with the surrounding skin.

Every surgical incision causes tissue injury, which must subsequently be repaired through a complex biological process involving different cells and chemical mediators in an extremely delicate balance. Excessively intense or prolonged inflammation, as well as inadequately regulated repair activity, can alter the organisation of the extracellular matrix and contribute to the formation of more visible scars, including keloid nodules that extend beyond the original wound site.

Blue Light Photobiomodulation can be used as an adjunctive therapy because it acts on some of the biological mechanisms that determine the improved morphology of repaired skin by modulating inflammation, cellular metabolism, and fibroblast activity.

Blue Light in the treatment of keloids

Blue Light can modulate the metabolic and proliferative activity of fibroblasts, which are one of the main ‘directors’ of the extracellular matrix reconstruction phase. These cells are involved in producing and organising collagen and other matrix components. The quality of the repair process depends on the balance between the production, organisation and subsequent remodelling of the matrix.

Excessive or disorganised collagen deposition can result in a thicker, stiffer or raised scar (a hypertrophic scar) or keloid formation. Consequently, modulating fibroblast activity has the potential to regulate one of the biological variables that contribute to scar quality.

Thanks to its ability to modulate the cellular activity involved in repair, Blue Light Photobiomodulation, when incorporated into clinical protocols aimed at removing or reducing keloids, can help reduce the risk of recurrence, which is very high and can exceed 50% when surgical removal is the only treatment, without any combined therapies.
