Efficacy of Blue Light therapy in the treatment of pressure ulcers

Confirmed by a randomised clinical trial

30 March 2025

A randomised clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of Blue Light photobiomodulation therapy for treating pressure ulcers was conducted at a rehabilitation hospital in Italy. Hospitalised patients with poor mobility and stage 2 or 3 pressure ulcers were enrolled in the study. Patients in the experimental group received Blue Light treatment for four weeks, while those in the control group received standard care only.  The results were reported in the article ‘Randomised clinical trial of the efficacy of the EmoLED medical device in the treatment of stage 2 and stage 3 pressure ulcers: The RISE_UP study’, which was published in the Journal of Tissue Viability. The study confirms that Blue Light photobiomodulation promotes tissue repair recovery in pressure ulcers and stabilises wounds that would otherwise worsen despite standard treatment. According to the authors, Blue Light therapy may be a valuable contribution to the daily management of pressure lesions, as it has an excellent safety profile, and incorporating this therapy into treatment protocols could accelerate healing and improve patients’ quality of life.
